Kids shouldn't learn an instrument?!?

Question

I was having a conversation with my bf about having kids. Topics came up and I said that I would like it if my children learnt an instrument, if they wanted, but certainly I'd encourage it. He was completely against it, saying music is bad and useles. That he wouldn't let his children waste time learning an instrument. It does nothing. I tried explaining that it's such a good creative outlet, that music is harmless. Now he enjoys music a lot so I don't get why he wouldn't want a child to learn the piano. His argument to me does not make sense and I think it's healthy to compromise. One of his reasons is that he is religious and God does not like music (I think otherwise)!! What do you ladies think? 😔

Research actually shows that music enhances cognitive functioning, so I would oppose his stance.  Beyond cognitive functioning, I would also argue that music can benefit children on another level.  For those who are innately gifted in music, it provides a creative outlet that aligns with their personal niche.  I am curious as to what extracurricular activities he WOULD approve of if he is opposed to music.  Would he allow your child to play sports?  The odds of a student receiving a music scholarship outweigh the odds of an athletic scholarship, and the "team" aspect of sports can just as easily be achieved in a music group such as choir, band, orchestra, etc. where performers must come together as a cohesive group and often compete.

As for whether or not God loves music, I am of the opinion that He does; however, I would also consider that a child will be exposed to music regardless of whether or not they play an instrument.  Why not allow the child the opportunity to create beautiful music in a positive, meaningful way rather than attempt to forbid it in a world where music is so prevalent?

I'm obviously a fan of the arts and believe it is an important part of kids' lives.  I work as an administrator in public schools and have seen first-hand time and time again the positive impact that music can have on children, families, and the community.  If your child is interested in music, I hope s/he will be afforded the opportunity to participate in some form or fashion!  Good luck coming to a consensus with your significant other! ☺️

Another reason that I don't like incredibly religious people. 
He seems stuck up. Let him know that if y'alls kid wants to pursue something harmless and fun, and something that could turn into a super successful career , then they can and he can just deal with it.

I mean....I guess it's a little useless in the sense that your kid will probably not be in he symphony, but I'm sure it's good for brain development and as you said a creative outlet. And hey, you never know, they could make a career out of it one day. Just let your kid do what interests them.

I started learning the clarinet when I was 11. I'm now 17 and have recently come home from my school's band tour in Singapore. It was the most amazing experience of my life. Music has been my focus and passion at school for the past 6 years. I graduate this year and am going to pursue my love of music.

My siblings feel the same - my sister plays the flute and has been since 2006, and my brother started on trumpet in 2009, changing to tuba in 2012. We've all made amazing friendships in the band, and other bands we've been a part of.

Music has been the best part of high school.

As a nine year member of band, I can definitely say I'm on your side. Music is a wonderful creative outlet that helps young people learn discipline and specialize in an area. It can also provide tons of scholarship and leadership opportunities as the child ages. Also, please tell your boyfriend to show me where in the Bible it says that God doesn't like music because that, my friend, is simply not true.

I think it's good to learn as much as possible and to try different things as a child so you can discover what you enjoy and want to pursue.  I really don't see any harm in learning to play an instrument and I will encourage my child to at least try - our house is full of guitars because my husband plays so it'd be nice if the little one enjoys guitar and it could be something they do together.

My 11yo can play piano and trumpet. The piano was HIS choice to start lessons. IMO it's got to be something THEY want to do. Otherwise it will be a battle and a waste of money. Trumpet started with band in the 5th grade.
