Braces/Retainers

Okay, so I am 18 years old. I've had braces since I was 15 and I just recently got them taken off about two months ago. I have never had bad breath problems until after my braces were removed and they gave me a retainer. I brush my teeth three times a day and I brush my retainer every morning when I take it out and every night before I put it back in. Regardless my breath is still so awful after I take my retainer out and even after I brush my teeth I can still taste/smell the retainer smell..... Has anyone else experienced this? I'm so embarrassed about it because it's such an awful smell but I did everything the orthodontist told me to do to take care of them.
