Question

I have a friend that is being harrassed by a group of girls at school and they have openly spoken of her sex life (personal experiences) on the internet. Can she press charges on them for exposing her privacy on social media? If so, what would the charges be?

It's summer time. I'm not sure if you have school in the summer but it's probably not much teachers and principals can do if you aren't in school. If you are in school then report it to them. If not then there aren't specific laws for cyber bullying but there are laws for harassment and menacing behaviors like threats and such. Plus there is a law against discussing sensitive topics such as rape. If she's just spreading rumors and not actually harassing her then she can try for defamation of character. But as another poster said, "they have to actually be rumors." Other than that, it's not really much that she can do to press charges as of now because other than threats and harrassment, there no concrete laws.

They can be charged with defamation of character if the statements have been shared with a third party and are damaging to her reputation in the community. The only problem with defamation is that if the statement is actually true there's nothing you can do about if but if they are spreading false information they can be done for defamation. Personally I would just recommend talking it out with the girls or getting someone like parents, teachers or some other authority involved because taking someone to court can cost a lot of money

If you can go to your principal. If there are laws for it in your state they will know exactly what to do and what can be charged.
