Is it cultural appropriation to box braid your hair if you're not African American (or dark skinned) but have unmanageably curly hair?

I had a conversation with someone who said that box braiding your hair if you aren't "black" is cultural appropriation (she's pale skinned). I myself am brown and have curly hair and by her standards, am not allowed to manage those curls with braids.

What is your opinion?
