Anyone have fibroids?!!! I need advice

So I'm 19 and I recently went to the doctor about my heavy periods that have recently been painful and she suggested birth control but before she gave me a prescription she said that I would have to get a pelvic ultrasound because there is a chance I have uterine fibroids especially since I'm black and 8 out of 10 of us have them. I'm a little scared and just want to know if anyone has them or knows someone who has them. My great aunt had them and had to have her uterus removed after one burst. So if you know anything please help.
