Does long distance relationships work?

Me and my friend have dated before for about a year before making the stupid decision of breaking up. We still talked and turned into fuck buddies for another year and a half. Just recently I moved to LA and while he is back up in SF we miss eachother more than ever and he even said he was thinking about getting back with me before I moved, but didn't want me to give up a fresh start for him again (this has happened once before). He's weird about long distance relationships, and I know I've never had luck with them, but I really think it could work out.
