Back to normal but why?

Long story short, I hooked up with this close friend of mine, twice, things were good then he all of a sudden became distant and we were avoiding eachother for about a month. Anyway so a few days ago we all of a sudden started talking again like nothing had happened, which I'm not complaining about at all, in fact it's what I've been wanting but didn't think would happen because he was being such a douche during that month but now he seems to be back to his gentleman self and I'm just a little confused as to why? I'm obviously a lot more cautious this time round because I don't want to be left looking like a fool so I was hoping you ladies could give me some insight. He is one of my closest friends and I don't really want to hook up with him again as things didn't go well the first time, I'm just glad I have him back as a friend.
