How often do you pump if any? -to the mothers who breastfeed on demand

I breast feed whenever he is hungry. Every 2-3 hours. I have too much milk so I have to use a nipple shield to slow my flow down. My doctor said to pump first thing in the morning to completely empty my boobs and I should be good for the rest if the day. I still get engorged by evening and usuallynhave to pump again. I freeze the milk for using bottles later. How often do you pump if you nurse on demand?

Don't pump! If you are too engorged just pump a tiny amount to relieve a bit. The more you pump the more your badly makes milk. The only time I ever pump is if I'm leaving LO with a sitter. Then I'll pump right before I leave.

Also- is your doctor who told you to pump a lactation consultant or just a obgn who specializes in labor and delivery?

I only pump so that my BD can feed our daughter once a day. So I pump In place of that feeding. Or if I'm engorged.

If you have too much milk I wouldn't pump because your body should work with the supply and demand system so pumping tells your body it need so produce more milk! I would just try exclusively breastfeeding and not pumping. Personally I rarely pump- I wanted to increase my supply and my baby was really sleepy a recent morning so I pumped a bit to ensure that I'd have good supply when she was ready and to feed her in the evening when I guessed she might want to cluster feed.
