how do you explain to 5yr old difference between girl & boy??

Question

My 5yr old girl asked me about her little sister. 'How do you know this is girl and not boy?' I said Dr told me. 
How come Dr knows about it? He must have told you about it!!
I am confused and I don't know how to explain? 
Please can you suggest me.

Really‽ my son is 3.5 and has known the difference for ages. Mummy is a girl because she has bits (we shower with him and no one gets privacy on the loo, as such he even knows about tampons & they go in my bits to catch the blood), and that daddy; and him and his brother are boys because they have willy's.

From that he realises that his aunts, grandmothers, female cousin, and animals that we use "she/her" with are girls and that grandfathers/uncles, male cousin etc are boys.

I think, don't beat around the bush and make up white lies. She's old enough to understand the difference, explain when she goes to the toilet and wipes she has a <insert name you use> and so does her sister & the doctors can see that when they scan mummy's tummy.

Long overdue explanation. Girls have a vagina and boys have a penis. If you are uncomfortable with your child using the technical terms for genitals...explain that some people are uncomfortable with these words, so in public we say "privates". Good luck and remember to teach: privates are not shameful! We all have them! But they are YOURS and nobody else should touch them!

Haha, you'll probably have to give a real explanation. I asked my mom that question when I was about that age while we were walking through the grocery store. Needless to say, everyone within earshot had a good laugh at how baffled I was! I told her I didn't believe her and that I was gonna ask my dad for the truth when we got home.
