what happens if someone claims my child on their tax returns?

My SO's father told us "I haven't paid my taxes so I'm going to claim her." She is our 9 month old baby girl. How much money do you think he will get and will he be able to claim her every year then?? How will we be able to take him off if we want to claim her? 
EDIT: we take care of her. He has bought diapers and wipes since she was born (my boyfriend and I were finishing highschool), my BF and I bought all of her gear and everything else ourselves. My grandma buys her forumla sometimes. My boyfriend is started his job at the end of this month so he won't have to pay for anything. I just don't know how any of this works and don't know if it's a good idea or not.

As far as I'm concerned he can't claim her if he does not financially support her. If you don't want him to he CANNOT claim her. You are the one missing of on a huge amount of money.

You shouldn't let him claim her unless he actually takes care of her. If he were to get audited that would cause huge fines. Every year is independent so claiming her one year shouldn't have any effect on any other year

Basically he wants to claim your child so he will get a large refund back (and it's usually a big one when you're claiming kids) since he doesn't file taxes I would bet that he owes the IRS money so the "refund" would all be held by the IRS to pay his back taxes. You yourself are giving up a refund that could go a long way for you and your kid. I don't really know about the legality of the situation but it seems suspect to me. Maybe speak to an accountant for some advice.

My husbands dad bullied him into that b4 we got married and i adopted our son. You will have to sign tax papers b4 anything can be done. Its a yearly process and if he tries again without your permission and you claim the child he can/will be charged by the government. Honestly when my fil did it he didnt get but a few hundred extra. Its only big for parents or legal guardians otherwise its not that big a deal.

Does he have her social security number? He can't claim her without it. Also if he's not providing at least 50% of her financial support, then legally he has no rights to claim her.
