Low hard cervix?

Question

I know I'm only supposed to check my cervix while I'm trying to detect if I'm ovulating or not but I was getting positive opk's but my cervix never rose really high and got soft, I ovulated on Saturday and today my cervix is low and hard.

So how do you check your cervix? Just stick your finger inside? And what do you check for?
