Do you think people should be required to vote?

I had a some friends that were citizens of Brazil and got into conversation about what she plans on doing on her trip. One of the things she said she had to take care of was vote. She said it's required if you're a citizen. There's a chance I could have misunderstood her completely so if I'm wrong please feel free to correct. Now this was years back so things could have changed but with the elections nearing and having so many people saying they don't want to vote at all I thought it would be an interesting conversation to have with you all!

I don't think it should be forced upon, however I do believe it's our duty as citizens to partake in the process and growth of our country. I truly do not know who I will vote for this election, but I WILL vote. Not only did many people fight to get me the right to vote, but I want to be apart of change. I don't think it's right for people to sit there and criticize our country and then refuse to vote. If you have an opinion and you want to see change, GREAT, but don't do nothing about it an expect it to fix itself. We have to work together as a country to be better.

I live in Australia where voting is mandatory, it's still possible for people to place an invalid ballot and forfeit their vote and a lot of them do. I feel like it's lazy to not make an informed descision on something that directly effects you, your family, your community etc. Evil will persevere if good people do nothing.

What about felons? They still have to act as regular citizens (taxes taken out of paychecks & such) but they can't vote, or own guns (even if their crime was nonviolent). I know people say "if you fuck up living against the government you shouldn't vote", but obviously I'm talking about people who returned to the outside

If it's a requirement it's no longer a right...
We have the freedom to choose if we want to vote or not.
I personally think that people who aren't educated about the issues and choose not to vote because they don't know what the hell they are talking about are better than people who vote just for the sake of voting.

In Australia you are required to vote. There's both positives and negatives. However, a lot of the time I notice more of the negatives like people not taking it seriously and drawing their own party boxes on the ballot papers and voting for them. Just being idiots 🙄 so I don't really know where I stand on this
