when did you start teaching your baby sign language?

I want to do this with my daughter, she's 3 weeks old now.

My brothers MIL just semi-retired after teaching ASL for 30 years and she now is working with 2-6 families a year teaching hearing impaired babies ASL. We are lucky enough to be signing for extra communication and not because of any kind of impairment, but I have asked for her advice numerous times. She has recommended starting at around 3-4 months. Pick 5-10 "everyday" signs that are more geared toward basics (milk, sleep, mama, dada,  more, all done, bath, etc). Use signs consistently until about 5-6 months. Then start to add 1 sign each week until you are using all the signs you want to use. Don't expect them to intentionally sign back until 10-12 months. Some babies sign as early as 8 months, some sign later than 12. As long as you are consistent, baby will eventually get it. We are having a blast signing. My daughter is 5.5 months and goes into full on dance/happy mode when you sign "milk" to her! It's soooo cute. Good luck!!

Around 4 months I started using basic signs milk mommy daddy up please thank you stuff like that and as my son got older I introduced other signs he's 4 now and is pretty good at it. He has a speech delay but no hearing issues so he uses signing when he is frustrated and can't say what's wrong it's been a huge help.

I started teaching my son around 6 months when we started introducing solid food and would do "more, all done, please, thank you, milk, water etc". He caught on very quickly and now at 2 has pretty advanced verbal skills. I highly recommend teaching sign language because it made communicating so much easier at a young age.
