1-3 month sleep average. Is there such a thing?

My son is 6wks old and I'm just trying to make sure he is getting enough sleep. My hub and I have been trying to keep him up all day with a few short naps in hopes he'll sleep through the night. FAIL. FAIL. He's up in his same pattern at night. I know this is a google question but I'm trying to stay off of there. I always fall into the abyss on google searches. Here's my sleeping ZiBear.

Don't keep him up during the day!! As you're finding, it just makes him overtired and messes up his night sleep too. Babies need to sleep a LOT. I'm a big believer in the 90-minute sleep pattern: 90 minutes after he wakes up from any sleep, no matter how long or short, he should be asleep again. That means 75-80 minutes after he wakes up, you should be swaddling him up and getting him settled to sleep again. Be very diligent about it. For the first few days, you'll feel like all you do is stare at the clock. But supposedly this mimics their natural sleep/awake cycle. Young babies just shouldn't stay awake for too long at a time, even if they aren't giving you sleep cues or looking tired.

My baby took terrible scattered catnaps all day too until we started this. I thought there was no way I could get her to sleep that much! But I was amazed, she started going right to sleep every time. I think she was around 6-7 weeks then. And within 2 days, she slept through the night and has kept doing it ever since (she's 19 weeks now). Sleep begets sleep!

Every baby is a little different so of course there's no guarantee, but it sounds like it's worth a try! Anything would be better than what you're dealing with now, right? 😉 Good luck!

He will get overtired if he doesn't take a nap every other hour or so. I did the same thing with my LO in the beginning and was so tired because she just wouldn't sleep and took cat naps.
