Should female/male correctional officers respectively be allowed to guard male/female inmates?

So, I'm in a correctional law class where we recently talked about use of force in the prisons. I'm from NC, where there is a town called Goldsboro, the area was affected badly by Hurricane Matthew. Due to the flooding issues or whatever, the prisoners were not being given their canteens (a privilege) even after they had ask for them from their superiors....

To make a long story short, there was a riot with 750 inmates on a weekend where only 8 guards were on duty. 4 female guards and 2 nurses were locked into a closet because the inmates were trying to "get to them" assumably to sexual assault, rape or worse.

With this being said, do you think this makes a case for why male guards should monitor male prisons and female guards should monitor female prisons? It has nothing to do the the ability of a woman, but rather the danger when a riot occurs, or sexual assault. and in cases with both male and female guarding the opposite sex, there's the opportunity for sexual relations. Also, the probation officer I know said he's rather work with men because he can't tell when a woman is bring truth or when she's 'playing him'.

So all in all, do you think male/female guards should only guard male/female inmates?
