safe water proof mattress cover?

Buying 2-3 waterproof crib mattress covers has always been on my to buy list for our new baby. Recently I've seen sereval comments about them not being safe? Are there any that you ladies recommend that are safe? Or what do you do to prevents leaks from going through to the mattress?

Most crib mattresses are plastic lined anyway. But if you do get a cover I recommend getting a plastic one that zips all the way around instead of the ones that just go on top of the mattress like a fitted sheet, they can be slippery and pop off and it's not breathable, that may be why it's not considered safe. The ones at the baby stores are expensive, I got a zip around one from target for I think $20. They're wipeable so there's no need to get more than one.  If it gets soiled you just wipe it clean with a wet rag or kitchen spray if really dirty, it's not absorbant so it dries immediately. You don't machine wash them.
