Sex Differences with SO

Me and my SO have been together for almost a year now, and I love him to death. But lately our sex life has gotten very vanilla for me. To the point where I avoid it as much as I can and just get it over with when it does happen. I've talked to him about my love for having a dom/submissive role in bed, and all things rough. But he brushes it off and continues with the same old same old. So what I really need advice on is how can I get him to understand me a little better and maybe try? And if nothing fails to work, do I ignore the vanilla sex life since every other part of our relationship is absolutely wonderful.
