Being proud of your skin color and nationality

Some people think it's a weird concept and say that you shouldn't be proud about your skin color or what your nationality is simply bc you were born that way and there was no choice in that to be proud about it. That was only one of the only reasons that was told to me, so I'm not sure what other reasons that there might be, but do you agree with this?
