Introducing open cup?

Has anyone given their baby an open cup to drink from? I hear babies should be able to drink from an open cup by 1 year

I let Elisa drink from an open cup but it almost always turns into a mess because she's super excited. But I found this and it's the best thing ever!!!

Currently my son just chews the rim if I offer a cup. He chews everything though! He's 7.5 months.

I've let my son have a sip of water from my glass a couple of times but that's about it. He thinks it's about the coolest thing ever!
