You only get pregnant on the day of ovulation. However you can have sex 5-7 days before then since that's how long sperm live inside of you. The sperm waits for the egg to be released and then penetrates it and conception begins. The process takes two weeks before actually becoming pregnant. If you have sex on ovulation day you really only have about a 12-24 hour window to become pregnant depending on your body. If your partner's sperm is strong and can survive, you could have sex 4-5 days outside your fertile window and possibly get pregnant (depending on the day you actually release an egg). But, again, the sperm would have to be strong enough to survive for that long.
