Tanning while pregnant?

My friend is pregnant and she just started tanning. She thinks that as long as she is not overheated or uncomfortable that the baby will be okay. Thoughts?? Would you tan while you were pregnant??

According to ACOG - there are no studies that provide conclusive evidence that tanning beds directly harm your baby. However, most health care providers advise against any activity that might raise your body temperature, such as saunas or tanning beds. Overheating is associated with spinal malformations in the baby. In other words, why risk it?

Uh I'm pretty sure thats not the best idea. A tanning bed is a different UV ray then the sun. She might not be uncomfortable or overheated but she has no idea whats going on inside where the baby is.

I have worked at a tanning salon for 3 years now. Tanning does not hurt/affect the baby. You just need to be cautious to not over heat your body same as when your taking a bath. Tanning in moderation is NOT going to give you skin cancer. Burning over and over is what gives you skin cancer. Please educate yourselves on the topic of tanning and look at both the pros and cons before jumping to skin cancer conclusions. You need UV to live!

OMG wow. Tanning is beyond harmful to your body in the first place and second, the baby should never be in a warm/hot place for any period of time. This is why hot tubs are to be avoided during pregnancy.

I tan now and then especially in the winter because I have seasonal depression however I am not pregnant and if I was I wouldn't be using a tanning bed. You can't go into a hot tub while pregnant so I would assume tanning would be just as bad

Well if she just started it won't be a hard habit to break immediately. 
Pregnant women cant enjoy a Jacuzzi for a few I doubt they can lay in a box and bake...

Tell her if she wants a tan to use a self tanner. I use it.  St.tropez is amazing.  I would never use a tanning bed even if i wasn't pregnant.  Love the sun but take all precautions when I'm in it

Actually, tanning can deplete your folic acid levels.. Therefore not a good idea to do it while pregnant.
