Maybe its really pop ups?

Possibly silly question Im sure, but do repeated porn pop ups actually appear on cell phone browser history anymore?

My partner and I will routinely use each others phones if our own is dead, and one day I was checking the history for a page I'd looked at myself the week prior (crafting idea) and noticed, in what appeared to be a specific search sequence, porn pages all from the same place. I asked about it (out of curiousity), and was told it was a pop up. Its happened several times since. Part of me may know the answer already, but is it possible for there to be several pages in a row in the history if its just a pop up?

To clarify in advance, I don't have a problem with porn itself, I just have an odd feeling about this and would take issue to being lied to if thats the case.
