Thoughts on engagement

So me and my boyfriend of over a year and a half talked about our ideas on engagement today. I really want to be engaged one day (not anytime soon) but he doesn't believe in engagement. He sees it as pointless because before being engaged, both people know they're gonna get married so engagement is just publicising the fact that they're getting married. I see where he's coming from and I support it, but I still want to be engaged one day. Am I wrong for still feeling this way?
