What is the age of consent exactly?

Everyone talks about it and says you are able to consent to sex once you reach that age. But then there's the 2 year rule or 4 year rule on top of that. And then people say you can't send pics of yourself unless you're 18? But then why can you have sex? This whole topic confuses me.

I'm putting this up anonymously because people on here are so judge mental. I am of the age of consent in my state and I do have safe, consentual sex. I just have questions!

Photos and videos under 18 = child porn in the eyes of the law. Each state is different on the age of consent. In my state, the rule is you have to be 16. And you can't be more than 4 years older than the 16 year old. Legally a 20 year old can sleep with a 16 year old in some states. In other states, not over 18. If a 15 year old slept with a 20 year old that would be rape in the laws eyes. She would be under the age of consent and she would ALSO be 5 years younger. Each state is different, so look into your local laws! But that's how I understand it where I live.

Some places have the _ year rule, some places don't. Now some places the age of consent is 16 or 17 and once you are that age you can have sex with whomever you what no matter what their age is. 
I think in most places once you hit 18 you're free to have sex with whomever you want. 
The picture thing has to do with the fact that you're still legally a minor if you're under 18, therefore making it child pornography.

Age of consent is saying you can consent to sex, though the age gap differs from place to place.

And anyone under the age of 18 is a minor and any photos/video of them is child pornography and that is illegal to distribute/posess.
