Why do you think people refuse to change?

Personally I'm not sin free, not that anyone is. There's not even recycling plants in my area for example, the nearest one is 3.5 hours from my house. So basically as far as that goes I try to compost/make pet food and reuse what we have, but it's not like that's enough to get rid of all the plastic waste 😞

A lot of it comes down to people being shitheads. There was a very unpopular article in the British papers last year that touched on the phenomenon of poorer people driving through more expensive suburbs and throwing their rubbish out of the window as a sort of fuck you. Obviously this wasn't meant to be repressentivive of class attitude or anything like that but was meant to illustrate the way that people who live in unpleasant places are less likely to want to help the environment because why would they? If you like in a ahithole town and you have no intention of working to get out of there, no amount of recycling is going to make your life better.

Honestly most people are just too lazy to sort all of their trash. I am guilty of this occasionally. At my old house there were recycle bins next to the trash bins and in my apartment there is a separate bin for recyclables. I might as well recycle since we can't throw certain things down the trash chute.

I think it's a combination of things really.

I don't recycle cans and bottles because there's nowhere to take them to right where I live. Although I do try not to buy them often. I also overuse water because I don't have to pay a water bill at all.

I have a bad habit of excusing stuff because I'm conscious in other ways. Like I think, "oh I'll buy more almond products and avocado since I have a low carbon footprint from not driving or eating meat".

Also finding what works. 18 months ago my city banned plastic bags. They just repealed it. It didn't work, and no one ever reused those shitty "reusable" bags the stores had, which just created more trash. Now they're going to try a 7¢ per bag tax instead. We'll see how that goes I guess.

I voted laziness because I live in a very green city. We are trying to be the greenest city in the world by 2020. I don't know anyone who doesn't recycle and there's no excuse because the city picks it up from your door. Everyone has to compost as well. Maybe in other parts of the world it has to do with limited access but anyone who lives in Vancouver and doesn't do the bare minimum has to practically TRY to hurt the environment.

For me, the environment just isn't something I care about at all. I know I'm awful. But I don't really care. I do things like recycle and I separate everything and even have a compost but I won't do anymore than that. I just don't care. I do find it annoying though when people just throw trash on the ground. Not because it harms the environment but because well.. It's trashy. We had one guy go to McDonald's or wawa every day and would throw his trash out on our street on his way home. My neighbor saw him do it once and followed him home and told him to knock it off. Lol. People suck and they don't care. Including me.
