What are the purpose of promise rings???

I'd like to start out by saying I DO NOT mean this offensively (I'm worried the title might come off bad to ppl). I'm not talking about purity rings I get those. I just haven't had much contact with people have received/given promise rings. I've always viewed them as...baby engagement rings? I dunno 😂

So enlighten me ladies. What's the thought behind them? Is it only about marriage? What does it mean when you are given a promise ring? What makes it more than just a jewelry gift?

it technically is a baby engagement ring. it's a promise to stay together through anything, to never give up. it's just a promise that the future is going to include the two of you, without the stress and stigma of full engagement.

It basically is a "baby engagement ring" 😌  promise rings are basically rings that are given when you're a little too young to get engaged but you want to promise that eventually you will and you'll always love your partner. My boyfriend and I are in college and my dad said he doesn't want us engaged or getting married till we graduated so he gave me a promise ring. He told he he promised to love me for the rest of our life's and the day we graduate he wants to take off my promise ring and propose l. Also we are saving ourselfs for each other. So that was another promise we made to each other 😌

To me they're pointless lol.. I feel like a ring shouldn't symbolize that we're going to stay together forever and one day get married. You can say that with your words and actions. An engagement ring has an actual universal meaning behind it. So if we're not ready to get married, a ring would be very nice as a gift just not as a "promise ring". Doesn't have to have any specific "meaning" unless it's an engagement ring.

I've always wondered this too when my boyfriend started talking about getting me one. I was like babe were both in our twenties, just save for an engagement ring 😂 I always thought they were a "I want to get married but we can't right now" sort of thing, or as you put it "baby engagement rings"
