what age to transfer to a toddler bed?

So my little boy is 3 in Feb and still sleeps in a cot. I'm trusting my gut instinct in believing he isn't ready for a "big boy bed" just yet. Maybe just after his third birthday. But what are everyone's thoughts, what age did you change your children's beds up?

My son was just two. He had started to try to climb out of his cot so for us it had to be then so he was safe.

Each one of my kids were different. The first two were crawling out of their cribs by 18 months so, I changed their beds. Got them a toddler bed. My now 6 year old was 4. He stayed in a crib because he kept falling off a regular toddler bed so he wasn't ready. My daughter is 3 and she is ready for her own bed as well! Soon, I can get rid of the crib altogether! Lol!

It depends on the child. I know some people who do it after one year. Others wait until 2-4. Given the fact that he's 3 now you may want to consider going straight to a twin bed when you're ready to move him out of a crib.

Our eldest hated his cot so we moved him into a toddler bed at 1 1/2

I usually transition when my kids start trying to climb out of their crib which is usually around the one year mark.  In fact, my youngest daughter had just turned one when I went to her room and found found her STANDING ON THE SIDE OF THE CRIB with only one hand on the wall for balance.  She was just smiling so big like it was nothing.  I knew I had to move her out of the crib THAT day.  (BTW the mattress was down as low as it could go-she was/is very fearless and will try anything)

I moved my daughter shortly after she turned two. She didn't get out of her crib or anything, but she was fully potty trained right around that age as well. So it was easier if she needed to pew at night to get out of bed on her own. She trained really quick for the oddlerbbed too. It only took one night of taking her back to bed 3-4 times! 
    Whenever you feel comfortable moving your child I suppose is fine. But I do think you should consider going right to a twin bed, with a side rail maybe.

I think you'll know when his ready every child is different my daughter is 2 and not ready for a bed but I'm sure I'll know when she is
