I expected my husband to not treat me like cattle. I'm not my parent's property to be given away.  The only person he should be asking for my hand in marriage, is me.

I don't expect my boyfriend to go to my parents about it first, but I'd say at least five years. If we plan on being together "forever," I don't see the rush in marriage.

It's different with everyone. My mOther will never like or approve of anyone I bring home so there is no point in trying to please her. As to meeting your parents if that's what you mean, if you are a kid probably sooner than later for your safety. If you are an adult out of the house a year is fine. If you mean because you want to get married it's nice of him to ask for their permission but it's not a necessity. If you mean asking for their permission to have sex with you? I don't think any parent would be overjoyed for that conversation especially if you are a kid.

What about never...? I don't want my boyfriend doing that, it's an outdated and sexist tradition that comes from the good old days when a woman couldn't take care of herself or make her own life decisions so either her father or her husband had the final say in how she lived her life. My marriage does not involve my parents and I don't want the engagement process to feel like I should have their permission or blessing to decide to get married, although I will be happy to share my engagement with them after he has asked me and me alone.
