What's more difficult?

I'm asking because I had an easy newborn. He slept all night, took multiple hour daytime naps so I could clean and cook. He was asleep whenever we were out for nearly the first five months. Now with an eight month old he wakes up constantly through the night, won't nap unless I'm holding him, and I constantly have to hold him while he's awake or he has tantrums.
What is your experience? I've heard often that newborn is the most difficult and it gets easier so I'm curious to hear what is more common.
