Women's march

Can someone please explain to me what this march was all about? I've read that it's fighting for equal rights. If this is true, do all these women truly believe we are not equal to men in this country? I'm not being sarcastic or trying to start an argument. I just would love someone to honestly explain to me why people were marching, without being all rude and getting fired up about it. I'm just curious :) thanks!
