Period type cramps & early labour

The last 2 days I've been getting period type cramps that come and go.
Noticed them last night first.
Then again tonight, and again right now at 3am.
How many moms had this as a first sign of early labour & how long did they hold out before being in active labour??
So much left to do, hoping my monkey cooks a little longer: just wanting an idea on whether or not I need to get my butt in gear!
