Can "Jack" be a nickname for James?

DH seems to think that Jack could be short for James, but I'm not convinced. We aren't fans of Jackson or John. Thoughts?

What about just going with Jack? I personally don't like it when people name their kid one thing with the intent to call them something else. My parents did that to me and it's been a pain in the ass my entire life

My cousin's name is Joshua but he has always been known as Jake.  You can pick whatever nickname you want.

My oldest son's name is James and I've never once thought of calling him Jack nor has anyone else for that matter sometimes we call him Junior because he's a junior but I think the only nickname for James really is Jimmy like someone else said why don't you just name him Jack? It is a name in and of itself that would kind of be like naming your son Adam but calling him Aaron it would be confusing lol

People who think Jack can't be a nickname for James are silly. How TF is it even supposed to be a nickname for John - they're the same length! Tradition is just tradition and should be tossed if it's dumb, like in this case. And I agree that standalone Jack seems a bit informal for an official first name. Just go for James/Jack!
