hair dye help!!

Okay so I dye my hair pretty often. Mostly different browns/black. But I also like to do fun colors like pink, purple, blue. Which usually stays in at least two months. A couple months ago I did like a maroon and I loved it. But it only stayed literally not even two weeks!  I had it professionally done where as I usually do my dye jobs on my own. For those who are either hair stylist or have dyed their hair (especially shades of red) do you think it's better to get it professionally done or do it on your own?  What do you find last longer and looks better?
