how do "weeks" work?

So do I calculate how many weeks I am from the date we conceived? Or from the date of my last menstrual cycle? I told my doctor when we conceived but she goes by the LMC, also is the first week of pregnancy only technically a few days not a full week? This stuff is confusing for first time mommies!
