how long in hospital?

I hate hate hate hospitals. But I very much believe in the awesome power of medical intervention, and am 100% delivering in a hospital. My question is, if I have a normal vaginal birth with an epidural and with no complications, how soon can I get the hell out of there? I just don't see the point in hanging around; I won't get any sleep there since I am totally freaked out just being in a hospital, and I want to start my family's routines with our little guy as soon as possible. What have your experiences been?  I'm in North Carolina in the US.

Update: what did they do that made it necessary for you to stay more than a few hours? And could you have left earlier if you wanted to?

They require 24 hours but prefer 48... I begged to go home after our 24 hours!!!!!

Our hospital requires a minimum of 12 hours, but I've always tested positive for GBS so that requires a 48 hour stay.

You can ask what's typical at your hospital tour. My facility said 24 hours.

Some women are in & out the same day, some the following day i personally with my son was in 7 days and daughter 10 days! So you really cannot determine.. we all wish we can have an easy birth with no complications in n out lol i wish you the best of luck with that but normally with an epidural your not let out the same day

My doc says 24 hours if no complications. She said I can have another day if there are issues with breastfeeding. My friend had her baby last week with the same doc, and she spend 2 nights for that exact reason.

2 days usually and c section 3 days. Be prepared if you do have an emergency c section. I had one because my babies heart rate was dropping

With my first was vaginal with a failed epidural I stayed 3 days because I was only 16 and she has some jaundice. My second was vaginal no epidural also stayed 3 day. My third was vaginal with epidural stayed 2 days. My fourth was vaginal with epidural I stayed 3 days because of the spinal headaches. My fifth was vaginal no epidural we only stayed 1 day. I'm in Ohio.

I live in charlotte NC had my son 3 weeks ago I stayed 48 hrs since I tested positive for gbs but I could have left 1 day early and just took him to the pediatrician the next day to be checked but I needed the rest since I also have a 3 year old at home I knew once I left sleep would no longer be in my future for a while... but it also depends it didn't take long for my epidural to wear off either so that's why I was able to leave early if I wanted they gave me the option... but most hospitals like to keep you at least 48 hours
