Ectopic pregnancy?

I'm 4 days late and I haven't take a test yet but I'm having awful cramping. It's where period cramps would be but they are way worse than I've ever had. Im just trying to get ideas what it could be so I can talk to my doctor later this week. But my best friend mentioned cramping when she got pregnant.

My friend had this exact thing goin on and she's fine. She expressed her concern about an ectopic so they did the ultrasound early and everything was fine. 
However if your late for another reason your period might be trying to start and just can't and that's why it hurts so bad

Could be miscarriage ( I have had 2) or ectopic pregnancy. Or just bad period cramps
