How long once you started dilating?

I was told I was 'a loose 1cm' at my 35week appt (today). My OB says it's normal to walk around for up to 4weeks with the first few centimeters. Any experience?

I started dilating at 36 weeks and at 40 weeks I was 5cm and 95% effaced and walked around an additional week before I had my baby.
