Good gift ideas for a 1 - year-old? ?

My neice turned 1 last week and I want to get her a gift. I want to get her something useful and developmentally appropriate. Those who have had year olds, what was useful at that age, or what do you wish you had? Clothes, books, toys, etc... Just looking for ideas :)
