growing up disrespectful?

Is it just me or do you think children these days are growing up without basic manners??

I remember being six years old and being told I can't bring my toys to the dinner table, and to sit until everyone is finished eating. I was out for dinner the other night and saw a family with two small children glued to their individual iPads, and the parents socialising with each other.

I work at subway, and it is RARE for me to serve a child with manners. The only one I've served recently is a regular on Thursdays, comes in with her grandmother, and used to be prompted to use her manners (she's learnt now, and is very polite).

No. This happens with every generation and its exhausting to explain. You know the saying that you used "kids these days!" has been around for soooo long so yeah it's not a new thing to think kids are bratty. Sorry to say but your generation is more or less the same as this one. There are good and bad.

These things vary by area you live in and social economic classes, backgrounds, and the society around you. I hate when people make these generalizations across the board about "today's kids." Yes, some of today's kids suck. They did 20 years ago too. Some parents today are awful. They were 20 years ago too.

The expectation today for parents makes parenting exponentially harder than it was 30 years ago when I was roaming the earth as a tiny human. Society has changed. The rules have changed. My parents think I am a helicopter parent, but I'm not! I'm just a parent today!! Kids are expected to know so much more younger and younger all the time. When I was in kindergarten, I'm pretty sure we finger painted and ate glue. In fact, I'm pretty sure it wasn't even a full day. (Yes, I'm that old). My oldest of 3 is in kindergarten now and he's reading. Seriously. That's a HUGE change. Expectations aren't the same and sometimes that means priorities aren't the same. Yes, manners should be a better priority, but it's not always that easy. My kids are constantly taught about manners and please and thank you etc... they do not get electronics at the table when I'm at home. But on the rare occasion my husband and I choose to go out to eat, yup, I'm coming prepared with their leap pads and coloring. No shame in my game. Sometimes my marriage comes first and that includes talking to my husband. Judge away. I'm cool with that. I try really hard not to judge other parents. At the end of the day, I'm juggling 3 kids, a demanding career, a marriage, bills, a home, and a spouse who also has a demanding career working opposite my shift. My kids don't bathe everyday! Oh well!!! Some parents choose to focus on different issues. Manners could be a better priority yes, but parenting is god damn hard these days. Raising a decent tiny human isn't always cut and dry.

I feel this way a lot too. But I think it's just as I get older I notice more. I think there are polite kids and rude kids, but probably not in any high quantity then there have been before. I was raised to sit at dinner and engage with people and if I misbehaved cause I was "bored" I would be punished. But not everyone chooses to raise their kids that way, and that's ok. It's their child. I personally won't raise mine with toys at the dinner table, but that's my choice.

I think children are how children always have been. It has become more acceptable for children to be out with their parents. It also depends on the social class they come from.

I think it varies. I work with kids, most are polite. But something that you may find rude, others may not. It's a "mommy hack " to bring toys to dinner for a better behaved child. But to each their own

I've interacted with children who have better manners than adults...I work at a movie theater, and the kids/teens are so much kinder. A grown ass adult will just scream at you if their coupon happens to be expired, or if the movie happens to be sold out 😒

I asked my Nana about this recently. She pointed out parents are lazier with their parenting (not all but a lot) because they're too busy working to properly care for their children. I agree with her. I know my Nana had my dad and uncles using a knife and fork correctly before they started nursery (before they turned 3). My fiancé never learnt this however as both his parents worked and he was left to his own devices. My friend is 18, and has a 10 month old that has better manners than half the 12 year olds I see (and she has VERY LITTLE vocabulary).

No. Oh my god. This is becoming such an annoying line of topic. Things change as time goes on. The way you were raised isn't how children today are being raised just like the way your grandparents were raised wasn't the same as Hester Prynne in the Scarlet Letter would've been raised. Things change in society and that changes how children are raised. You raise your kids according to how the world works. You want your kids to have "manners" like you had? Teach them to. But god please stop whining about how everyone else parents their kids ESPECIALLY when it doesn't personally affect you.
