Waiting for period after delivery

How long should I wait for my period to come back? I'm not breastfeeding, and I'm a little over 9 weeks postpartum. I can't start my birth control until my period starts, and hubby and I tried to use condoms, but we both hated them and now we're using the pull-out method. I'm well aware that you can still get pregnant that way (not that I would mind so much, but my body might a little! 😅) but I want to know how long I should wait until I call my doctor or take a pregnancy test just to rule out that possibility?
