How can parents be so irresponsible?

Question

A high school acquaintance of mine posted on Facebook that her daughter, who will be 2 in May, opened and dumped a bottle of black nail polish all over the living room carpet, and then locked her out of the house to where she had to call the fire department to break open the door.

It really irritates me when people think they can leave a kid unattended for long enough to not only find, open, and dump nail polish (toxic if ingested), but then the parent is OUTSIDE and the kid closes and locks the door?!?! What in the fuck are you thinking? If you really need to go outside for any reason or leave the room really, take your kid with you, or put them somewhere they will be safe and contained, and out of trouble. My son is never alone unless he's in his crib in his room or in his high chair with toys, and that's only for me to run to the bathroom quickly, or if I'm doing dishes/making dinner and I'm actually right there but I can't pay full attention to him. I really can't believe that people think it's not only ok, but FUNNY that these things happen, when they could end up HORRIBLY.

I keep my nail polish up high on a shelf and one day when I was in the bathroom thinking my daughter was napping she escaped her crib and threw a stuffed animal at my shelf and knocked down all my nail polish, I found her with pretty little red fingers sitting in my room, all this happened in the 5 minutes it took to wash my hair.. Don't be so judgemental! Shit happens. Not everyone hovers over their kids all day long.

I'm not going to spend every second of my day hovering around my twins, that's just suffocating. Accidents happen, especially with toddlers, but you can't prevent any and all incidents from occurring. I feel bad for you if you haven't taken a proper shit without your kid in the room.

You are a helicopter mom, your friend is not, try not to be so judgemental.  I am sure the kid is ok, just being a typical two year old (you would be amazed how quickly they can open things).  Try to take a deep breath and dont let her babysit for you.

I run a daycare. You'd be surprised how quickly kids can go from one room to another in the time span of you running to the bathroom. Your just way too much pay attention to me. Kids need to learn independent play and not constantly relying on you to keep them entertained. My son once got the diaper cream and got it all over the kitchen floor that I had just cleaned. He's also managed to write with crayons on his bedroom wall when we were moving and things were still packed up he managed to do it. Relax and let your kid be a kid and if you don't like hearing about other peoples kids delete that person off Facebook.

You could get locked out picking up a package from the front porch. Do you not even open the front door without your child attached to you? That sounds exhausting. Will you also move into his college dorm with him?
