What does he mean by "not right now?"

Question

I'm not quite sure how to interpret this, help? So I have a good friend whom I have started to have a romantic interest in...but I also don't want ruin the friendship if he didn't feel the same. I try to not read too much into things but there were some things he said/did that seriously screamed "hint hint". For example, he randomly got me hot chocolate, he got me a Christmas gift and he told me that I came up in conversation during Thanksgiving dinner. So instead of being weird, I straight up asked him 
"do you see us becoming more than friends or staying just friends?" 
And his response was..
"Right now, just friends. I'm not looking for a relationship right now"

I would ask him to clarify, but...I'm too chicken. Plus, either way, he doesn't want a relationship so it doesn't matter but I just wanted to see what you all thought. So does that mean he doesn't like me or he just doesn't want a relationship right now but he does like me?

I think he just views you as a friend and didn't want to be rude and say he isn't attracted to you. I would maintain the friendship as normal and if anything changes down the road great otherwise you at least still have your friend. I know that's easier said than done when you have feelings for someone though 😕

Don't read too much into all of the nice things he does for you and do not wait around for him.

I think she just wants to be friends but will accept casual sex if you offer it. "Not right now" keeps you warm if he looks around and doesn't find anything else he likes.
If a guy is truly interested, he's asking you out now and making it clear now and you wouldn't have to hope and wonder.

It could be possible that he doesn't want to hurt your feelings and just say no, but "not right now" is a compromise. Those things that happened are pretty typical with friends so you might be reading into it too much.

In college there was a guy I liked and I asked to study together. He invited me to his home for movies and cooked spaghetti for us (apparently he asked friends to come but only I showed up, then another mutual friend finally did), he took me out to the movies, said one time "This past week was.... I really need to talk to you," which all gave me vibes. In the end when the question came up he said "if things were different." A crummy answer and not exactly a no, but pretty mich a no and a nice way to say it.

Trust me though it's not the end of the world. Carry on like normal and something better could fall in your lap. 😁
