Taxes & Welfare Debate?

Crystal
I'm curious my cousin in I are in a heated debate as to weather or not people who don't work can actually file taxes. Our argument doesn't include unemployment benefits, disability, ot even freelance but rather he's insisting that people on welfare can get huge tax returns and I'm pretty sure that is legally impossible. I was under the impression people had to fall over a certain low inome level just to be able to file taxes. And, no matter what people assume, I'm pretty sure welfare doesn't meet that level or even come close. I would like your all's opinions, also any proof backing them up. Thanks!!!!

Welfare benefits are not included as taxable income. So if you only receive welfare benefits and don't have any earned income you're most likely not filing a tax return. If you do have earned income, but it is just low enough that you still qualify for welfare benefits then you will file a tax return and likely get a large refund.

Pull up the IRS website and a list of non-includable income item, maybe that would shut him up? Lol, some people you just can't get through too.

that's exactly what I'm trying to tell him but he wants to argue it to the death lol, he has this judgemental stigma O see it all the time which is ironic because he's my cousin through marriage his mom raised him and his brothers single and did not work so 100% sure he shouldn't be so negative towards the subject

The less you make the more you collect, as long as you worked. Idk about not working though.

Ppl on welfare don't receive W2 form so they can't file taxes cause they didn't work .... they have other ppl that work claim their children as their dependent .... the person who claim the child will give the parent some of cut

My husband has a really great job, im a SAHM but we also meet the requirements of being a low income family. I receive welfare ($75 foodstamps) which is barely nothing and we get back a good lumpsum back in taxes. $9,000+...

Well it depends I guess. If they are not working and only received welfare, then they don't have to file. At least not in Pennsylvania. That happened to my aunt. She didn't work, but received welfare and did not have to file. I'm not sure about Texas. But if they received any other income, I'm sure they'd have to file and would receive a good refund depending on their circumstances. Also the refund depends on if they have a dependent or not and all of that stuff too.
