homework isn't important?

I had a teacher in college who said her daycare was play based and not educational she says kids should have fun they learn a lot more than having to sit down and trace words all day (an example) she says kids in Elementary school shouldn't have homework because they don't necessarily learn anything all it does It make them hate school and they don't get to spend time with their family... she said she opted out homework for her kids up to 4th grade and they're perfectly fine now as adults.. 
any opinions?

Japan and China do the same and it works REALLY well. Why? Because kids are not supported to sit from 7 am til 1 pm cramming down books and sitting in a chair half asleep. The more fun a child has, the more they learn. The more boring u make it, the less inclined they are to study.
Same with homework. While homework is important for sure, as far as teaching responsibilities,  no kid should be repremended for not doing homework. Especially when homework gets hard. Instead of making a child feel like shit for not completing homework,  maybe see WHY he or she had trouble. Scholls that make things fun, have a higher iq and higher education.
Japan has kids taking naps in school and learning things about REAL LIFE. ..such as managing money,  credit cards and the value of a dollar. Teaching kids about real life,  instead of hard core math,  or hard core ANYTHING,  teaches them to know how to survive in the real world. And of course,  later in school,  u see implement base core math, science etc etc.
But number one factor why US is one of the lowest as far as school systems go, is simply because we make school the hardest and most boring thing in the world. ..AND,on top of that,  we punish kids by failing them when what they really need is guidence and pacience.

I am pro-homework because it's just not about knowing what the kids know in the classroom but also outside of the classroom and also gives the parents a general idea of what educational skills the kids have or maybe lacking. It should be an activity for everyone involved in the child's education. I'm not for giving kids a lot of homework or homework everyday but idk if completely getting rid of homework is the right thing either.

I'm a Kindergarten teacher and even though I do send homework it's completely optional. I think it's more of an assessment of their home life 🤷🏻‍♀️ and I have all day Kinder so those kids bust their butts all day. Not a big fan of homework 👎

I think the way my nephews teacher does it is good. He's in second grade and they get 1 sheet of homework a day (usually math) and most of the time he finishes in school. It just goes over what they worked on that day to make sure he understands it. It takes about 10 minutes for him to do, and it's the first thing he does when he gets home (if he didn't finish it in school, anyway). I think it's good and helps to start teaching kids time management for their future school work. I think any more than 1 sheet of homework would be a little much though.

The Dutch and other European countries do this, play-based learning. They have longer recess. There are tools for play-based learning in the playground. If the kids want to learn reading, writing, math then they teach them individually but it's not introduced into the curriculum until 2nd or 3rd grade. I definitely support this & there's lots of studies that do too. We're holding off on kids until we can afford sending them to one of these schools until 2nd grade. I also don't want to get in trouble for choosing to take our kids out of school for a week to go to Disney. My parents took us during the first week of school when I was in 6th grade and they hardly let me miss school. It was the best, no lines whatsoever 🤗 and we didn't miss a thing, only the first two days of school which they spend on syllabus
