ILetting people borrow money. Update

My bestfried and her fiancee were in between jobs ,were searching full time employment and working on call. They have thier own place two kids . When they needed money I never hesitated. Now since I knew situation always told them I don't need it back. My brother is working 2 jobs and asked I told him I would need it back. He snaps and said I didn't make best friend pay me back why should he? I explained to him that it was different situation. They didn't really have it to give and had pay rent light gas and have kids . I told him also they were looking for jobs at the time. They never asked unless it was important. I told him you just want to get your detailed that isn't an emergency plus you have 2 jobs. He still said I'm wrong. Am I wrong??

Update. Thanks, ladies I decided not let him borrow. The reason he knows is he was there when she asked and I told her she didn't. I didn't even think he was paying attention ,as we were at a gathering. I guess he filled in the blanks. I never disgust it with him until he brought it up. I will be more cautious in the future from now on.
