is this sleep training?

Erika • Gave up after 3yrs(PCOS) Found out a month later we were expecting. Anxiously waiting for EDD 12/10 to meet baby 👶🏻💙!
My LO will be 4 months next weekend. On his own he started to prefer taking his day naps In the crib (he used to fall asleep on his swing then randomly hated it. I laid him down the first time he refused to fall asleep in swing in his crib and he was out in seconds so I took that as a cue that he was ready for crib) so we tried day naps plus his first full night in the crib and it went very well. Some crying before bed but he took it MUCH better then me 🙈. Anyway it's been exactly a week now and he cried foranywhere  between 1 to 3 hours before falling asleep. Once he does he sleeps 12 hours without waking up not even once in between. It's the falling asleep part we're having trouble with. We do our routine (bath, bottle, book, bed) as close to the same as possible. Sometimes by a half hour off but usually around the same time. Other times if we gave him a bath during the day we skip it at night. We go in every few to caress him then we step back out and let him cry for 3 to 5 minutes then we go back and do it again. That's our pattern for the entire time he's crying before falling asleep. What are we doing wrong?? He has a night light but it's not too bright. He has his sound machine on. We don't talk or do eye contact with him. Room is right temperature, diaper is brand new, tummy is full. We read that sleep training should be perfected within 3 days. Baby should be put in crib and able to fall asleep on their own without fuss. We're going on a week now. Is he too young to sleep train? Should we bring him back to our room? We don't believe in letting him cry it out to the max but we understand he's learning so crying is expected and normal but are we going in too often? Not enough? Do different babies master this at different times? ANY (constructive) input is welcome. TIA! *here he is on his first night in his room 😭*
