Judy Garland, diva entertainer extraordinaire, turned into a gay icon with the release of "Over the Rainbow" in the The Wizard of Oz in 1939.
In an era when being openly gay was something that could get you beat up, kicked out, or worse, Garland's style and personal struggles resonated with gay men. Her bright and feminine brand of hope and perseverance lives on. Even after her death in 1969, Garland is a popular icon in the gay community.
