As an anesthesia provider I'll give you this advice. Once you have an epidural you are contained to the bed and unable to get up and move around. I would suggest waiting until you are several centimeters dilated and the pain starts to get bad... you don't want to wait too late because at that point it's hard to sit still for the epidural placement and it makes it harder for everyone.

Went to a birthing class here is Aus and  this question was asked. We we're told it's never to early or late. Depends on your pain tolatance.

If they have to break your water I would recommend getting the epidural before they do that! My doctor had a hell of a time breaking my water and it was the worst!

Dont try to wait to long.. because i was stuck at 2cm with my daughter and an hour later the pain got really bad so i asked for one.. well by the time the guy even got to my room my daughter was out already lol.. i guess they didnt think i would go from a 2 to a 10 in less then an hour

4-5 cm. You can't get out of bed agterwards.. try to last as long as you can!
