dating

So I've never had a boyfriend before and only gone out on a couple of dates before. So there is this guy who I have gone out with twice and I'm going to prom with him. I asked my friends and they said I was dating him ( they have never had a boyfriend either). To me dating would be when he asks me to be his girlfriend. Right now we are just friends going out together. What are your opinions and throghts on the situation?
