IUD removal help

I have the IUD and about a month after insertion i began having really bad cramps, i went to the hospital to see if it had moved or whatever and they opened me up and saw the strings had gone inside me but when i had a scan they said that it had not moved. i am now wondering that when it's time to get my new IUD, how will they remove it? will they have to do some digging around? because that sounds painful.
